Now before I begin I'm not very good at explaining anything computer related I had the laptop on this morning and closed it down as normal. Then as it was shutting down it was applying updates. When I turned it on this afternoon the window/browser? didnt have the solid colour bar at the top/bottom of the screen and nor can I see the little bar thing that shows the page is loading. The box where you type the website address is smaller and the home/favourites icon used to be on the left side of the screen and is now on the right. Any help please?

Firstly, what browser are you using?  That will determine what advice you get.

If it's IE, to get your status bar back up, go to View, Toolbars and select Status Bar.

Also check to make sure that you haven't defaulted to a different browser.  Sometimes updates will change your defaults, so you may be using Chrome instead ....

If you haven't changed browsers, you may not be able to do anything about where the Home button sits.

Ahhhhh - progress.  You're not seeing the toolbars.

In the blue space at the top, right click and select Menu Bar.  So the same again and select Status bar.  Start with that ane see how you go
