Yes I know its easy to get an ABN number but wouldn 't that make problems ie with TAX and the GST. Ie ABN numbers are meant for people who have businesses.
From the site Who is entitled to an ABN Do I need an ABN? Not everyone is entitled to an ABN.
Companies registered under the Corporations Law and business entities carrying on an enterprise in Australia are entitled to an ABN.
Employees and hobbyists are not entitled to an ABN as they are not carrying on an enterprise.
Self-funded retirees do not need an ABN. They continue to use their tax file number when reporting their annual income to the ATO.

Sorry if I don't make much sense, I just know that there's no problems with getting one, for this kind of work. One of the mystery shopping companies requires you have one aswell.
I had an ABN a couple of years ago and had no problems. The company I worked for required me to have one, but I didn't end up making enough money at the end of the financial year to have to pay any tax. After I stopped working for that company and stopped using the ABN, it eventually got cancelled.
My husband also had one a few years ago when he worked as a plasterer. He wasn't full-time or part-time, but had an ABN as a Sole Trader and had to pay his own tax, as the guy he worked for paid him gross.
Oh and you don't have to pay any GST unless you make over $50,000/year.
